Pain in Early Stages of Pregnancy

Pregnancy is a beautiful phase in a woman’s life. It is that phase in which she feels the gradual changes in her body, copes with the discomfort and then brings her bundle of joy into the real world after nine months. Exciting as it may seem, but the period of pregnancy is quite demanding and requires a lot of courage from the mother’s side to keep her good health despite the pains and discomforts. The most common early pregnancy symptoms are irregular menstruation. When a pregnancy is confirmed, the little discomforts starts showing, the scale of which can differ in different women.

Every pregnancy is unique and thus, gives different experiences every time a woman gets pregnant. But a general consensus shows that most of the women face pain in the early stages of pregnancy .

Some of the common discomforts of early stages of pregnancy are:

Breast changes

It is the most common sign of early stage of pregnancy. Women notice their breasts increasing in size, which is caused due to the enlargement of milk glands and fat tissues. The breast firmness and tenderness, bluish veins, darkening of nipples and discharge of a fluid called colostrum from the breasts, are some of the normal signs, which need not be worried about.
Extreme fatigue

While feeling tired in the early stage of pregnancy is quite normal, since the growing baby needs extra energy, but in some cases, fatigue may mean anemia, i.e. low iron levels, which must be taken care of immediately. Regular blood tests, exercise schedule and plenty of rest, is what a pregnant women is supposed to do to avoid pain in the early stages of pregnancy.

Back pain

Almost all women have this problem of back pain pregnancy, the reason being the increased pressure in this area because of the growing size of the uterus. To lower the chances of back pain, the mother should keep a healthy lifestyle and exercise regularly.

Nausea or Vomiting

Though not all women face this problem, but still it is common to have an upset stomach, which can lead to discomforts like nausea, also called as morning sickness . It has also been said that nausea is caused due to hormonal changes and remains till the fourth week of pregnancy. One of the precautions that one can take is to avoid oily and greasy foods and eating small but healthy foods frequently. A pregnant woman should eat dry foods like cereal, toast or crackers before going to bed, so as to avoid morning sickness.


Headaches are common and can be caused due to various reasons like tension, congestion and constipation. Women usually keep thinking about the problems that their nine-month journey could bring and this apprehensive attitude can also cause headaches. Although headaches are normal early signs of pregnancy, but if the problem persists, then a doctor should be consulted.

Frequent urination

The first three months are called early stages of pregnancy, when the fetus starts growing, the pressure of the uterus on the bladder increases which causes frequent urination. Though it is a normal sign, but if it is accompanied with burning sensations for an unexpected long time, then it may mean urinary track infection and must be treated immediately.


The blood pressure can show some fluctuation during the period of pregnancy and thus needs a regular check up. Since the nutrient requirements of the baby starts increasing day by day, the mother can face fatigue and dizziness due to low blood sugar levels. It is thus advised to keep a healthy eating habit throughout the nine-month period.

Abdominal pain/Cramping

In the early stages of pregnancy, women often face lower abdominal pains, similar to menstrual cramps. The cause of this abdominal pain pregnancy is the enlargement of the uterus, to carry the baby through the next few months. While this is a normal sign, but if cramps are accompanied with other symptoms like chills, fever; spotting or bleeding, then a doctor must be consulted immediately, because it may mean ectopic pregnancy, miscarriage or preterm labor.

Heartburn or indigestion

Due to the changing hormone levels, the digestive system works slowly, which is why most women face indigestion or have a burning sensation in their stomachs. It is thus very important for a pregnant woman to eat healthy foods like cereals and more of fiber.

Swelling and varicose veins on feet and legs

The increasing pressure of the baby in the uterus can cause problems like swelling of feet and legs. Though it not very common, but in some cases, women have also reported swelling of their veins.

Besides these, there are some other problems that emerge as early pregnancy symptoms like bleeding and swelling of gums and constipation, but by following a healthy lifestyle that includes good eating habits and proper exercises, the period of pregnancy can be made enjoyable.
